Cowboy egg is essentially toasting bread in a pan with butter and cracking an egg in the middle of the bread (after cutting a hole in the center of the bread). It tasted reeeaaaaaaaally good with the butter-toasted bread and a pinch of pepper! I would have this for breakfast everyday. Just perfect :)<br />

They are famous for their Portugese Pork Chop Buns (not shown), which costs only $3.50 (or $3.75, I forget) including a drink. It is such a good deal because the bun is enough to fill me up!<br />
<br />
My favourite is their fried chicken noodles ($6.00-$6.75) *note: cold drinks are $1 additional. They let you choose from a variety of noodles. I usually go with lai fun (thick vermicelli noodles).<br />
The chicken strips are fried perfectly; enough to give it a slight crunch. The chicken skin has a hint of lemongrass. It comes with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that complements the chicken quite well.<br />
<br />
However, most food court food have M.S.G. added, and I suspect this place to be the same. I am always thirsty after consuming their food. Nonetheless, their food is still my favourite in Parker Place.<br />

<br />
Well, today as usual, I was on Instagram looking at my friends' food pictures. And I came across a picture with couple of macarons with the caption "Sweet Spot Bakery". I immediately looked that up. And oh boy was I in luck! Sweet Spot Bakery happens to be located in Steveston Village (2 minutes drive from my house :P). So I decided to drop by to check out their macarons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzYBiQCSY4OUpDdC27nB3ajxEPJVeEo9iAHCWvhLtJ76RQB23cU5kwFyJUAwmQF-WrkDJd52r46KgxqpBYr_wbDP_SVsehKBGZh2tAH2mSdu_tUKlxreD0b7evkZx4BUIFk1KlxIit21ZU/s640/blogger-image-1415085786.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzYBiQCSY4OUpDdC27nB3ajxEPJVeEo9iAHCWvhLtJ76RQB23cU5kwFyJUAwmQF-WrkDJd52r46KgxqpBYr_wbDP_SVsehKBGZh2tAH2mSdu_tUKlxreD0b7evkZx4BUIFk1KlxIit21ZU/s640/blogger-image-1415085786.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately, when I arrived, there did not seem to be any macarons on display. So I asked when they will be done and the lady said in around 2 hours. That was probably a good thing since it gave me the opportunity to try out their other pastries. They have a wide range of pastries to choose from! Ranging from coconut macaroons to tiramisus!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
One thing I noticed during my visit was, when the lady behind the counter was picking out the pastries I want, she used her bare hands to obtain the lemon tart. The lemon tart was not sitting on any aluminum foil or paper, which meant she was touching the tart directly. Then she proceeded to ring in my order. The shop should definitely be more cautious about food safety issues!<br />

I ended up picking these 4 delicious looking sweets :) The top is <b>Lemon Tart with Italian Meringue, </b>to the right is <b>White Chocolate Mousse with Lemon Curd and Citrus Shortbread, </b>bottom is <b>Pistachio & Chocolate Opera Cake </b>and lastly <b>Milk Chocolate Mousse with Pecan Brownie and Raspberry <span style="font-family: inherit;">Gel</span></b><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: inherit; line-height: 16px;"><b>é</b></span><b><span style="font-family: inherit;">e</span>. </b><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ronald and I tried the pistachio opera cake and paired it with Starbuck's Casi Cielo. The two really complemented each other. Casi Cielo is a dark roast with "lemon and dark cocoa notes". The cake itself has rich chocolate flavours with hints of pistachio. In between the layers, there are pistachio bits in the fillings. This opera cake is at the appropriate sweetness level and is great with black coffee!</div>

Will be blogging more frequently now :)<br />
<br />
This past week, I have been swamped with midterms and quizzes. To finish off a dreadful week AND to start off my reading break, I decided to check out Sakura Sushi's UNI NIGIRI! I have always wanted to try this place after looking at my friend's instagram pictures. I called them in advance at school so I can pick them up when I get to Brighouse station. The location of the restaurant is in Brighouse Station Square near Bob Sandwiches (very convenient location!). Sakura Sushi offers authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi. I believe their chefs are Japanese!<br />
<br />
Sakura Sushi always have daily specials. You can always check their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/gosakurasushi?fref=ts" target="_blank">facebook page</a> or their <a href="http://www.sakurasushi.ca/" target="_blank">website</a>. The day I went, their specials were uni nigiri ($1.50 each), uni sashimi ($9.50) and california rolls and dynamite rolls combo (12 pcs total).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPur0Wq2CCa1rdWBUhEKtaNd-yThyANfZqE50lNVdyC4LCTM3DDiSn9fHxnc6yM6vTn5Of16P4CWCLQv3BcphCCaBT4TEmTE2McE8p7OpVJ54lDLEDW2nKukbJa6HJoB5JV_ERkBGxCmqu/s640/blogger-image--2038150758.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPur0Wq2CCa1rdWBUhEKtaNd-yThyANfZqE50lNVdyC4LCTM3DDiSn9fHxnc6yM6vTn5Of16P4CWCLQv3BcphCCaBT4TEmTE2McE8p7OpVJ54lDLEDW2nKukbJa6HJoB5JV_ERkBGxCmqu/s640/blogger-image--2038150758.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The picture above shows uni nigiri, california roll and dynamite roll combo, Sakura sushi (top box in the left) and chopped scallop (top box in the right). ALL the sushi we got were fresh! I was quite surprised when I tried the dynamite rolls (inside with shrimp tempura). Usually, dynamite rolls consist of close-to-stale shrimps that they drench in batter to cover the taste. But, with this dynamite roll, you can taste the sweetness from the shrimps. Sakura sushi is worth trying as well! I believe it has either salmon or tuna in it along with crab meat and tamago. The roll was well made and did not fall apart.<br />

Uni, oh uni. Last time I had uni was at Seto Japanese Restaurant over a year ago! I never really had a "thing" for uni, per say. But, through viewing pictures of uni numerous of times on instagram has spiked my interest again! The uni from Sakura Sushi is fresh. It literally MELTS in your mouth. I would recommend eating it right away. Since I ordered take out, the seaweed became a bit soft and chewy.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
Would I recommend Sakura sushi? OH YES.<br />
I think I sense a uni feast with sake some time soon ;)</div>

We decided on Cloud Atlas but we couldn't make it to the showings. So we settled with Skyfall!<br />
<br />
After reading GoodEat Janice's <a href="http://www.goodeat.ca/2012/11/big-river-brew-pub-silvercity-riverport-richmond.html" target="_blank">post</a> about Big River, I suggested to give that a try! The pub was quite packed when we arrived. Ronald and I each decided on what we wanted to get and ordered right away. However, we did NOT expect the food to take 40 minutes to arrive. Yes, <b>40 minutes! </b>The hostess was very apologetic about the situation. She explained that everyone wants to grab a bite before the movie, which was understandable.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><b>Pesto Chicken Penne</b><br />Chicken, sweet bell peppers & onions in a creamy basil pesto sauce with parmesan and penne. Served with signature beer bun</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Ronald got the penne! The bun on the side is actually a beer bun. The bun was soft and chewy with a strong malt or barley taste. Need to look up recipes on how to make this! Aside from the bun, the penne was average. It could have been served a bit more hot.<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

My turn :D I had a chicken craving (again). Scanned the whole menu and settled for this! I was going to get what Janice recommended, but could not recall what she had suggested. The chicken was DELICIOUS! The meat was tender and juicy. The barbecue sauce was rich and definitely brought out the chicken flavour. It would have been nice if there was more sauce for the mashed potatoes as that was a bit dry.<br /> <br />

Since Big River is a brewery, I wanted to try their beer! I picked the one which seemed like everyone else was getting :P I thought the beer was decent! Definitely better than some of the ones that I have tried.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would like to visit Big River again, only if I don't have to wait 40 minutes for my food! :(<br /><div>

I didn't take a picture of the interior. The store is not too big! When you enter, you can see their open kitchen. On the left there is a fireplace with a sofa. So cozy :)<div>

I highly recommend this cozy donut store! The ladies working there were very nice! Next time, I will definitely stay and enjoy my donuts in the store :)</div>

Update for October - I did not go to any of the places on my list. :( Maybe after final exams...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This was actually my lunch couple weeks ago! I haven't had time to write up a blog post. But here it is!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I got this meal combo at The Moon in UBC SUB's basement. I remember when I was in first year, this meal combo (combo A) was only $3.75. Now it costs $5!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Combo A consists of choice of fried rice/fried noodles and a choice of sides. For sides, they usually have stir-fry veggies, fried chicken wings, sweet and sour pork and something else :P. I go for the chicken wings every time!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcUoQ75cRFXVBel3tGDgBHkvLWM_m-zTreBCxFt887JJ9qXEokPpwSYI7fDHGzbuGTyqZlxmpcfDEBshEE9nZX04jvCuRvb93g5HlDxCUSGhZQGHZKyZ9zxe6dB0T-DDq3b0zJSrEXhZZf/s640/blogger-image--1353444947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcUoQ75cRFXVBel3tGDgBHkvLWM_m-zTreBCxFt887JJ9qXEokPpwSYI7fDHGzbuGTyqZlxmpcfDEBshEE9nZX04jvCuRvb93g5HlDxCUSGhZQGHZKyZ9zxe6dB0T-DDq3b0zJSrEXhZZf/s640/blogger-image--1353444947.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The chickens are very crispy. But some times, I don't think the chicken tastes too fresh...and the fried batter masks that taste. So I don't eat this very often! Also, I prefer the fried rice over the noodles as the noodles tend to be kind too dry in my opinion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is lunch box fills me up every time! Definitely worth the price (since everything else in the SUB is so expensive...)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Check them out if you are craving for Chinese food :)</div>

Chicken craving = SATISFIED!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After reading The Food Queen's blog post about <a href="http://thefoodqueen.com/2012/10/18/that-barista-thing-2012/" target="_blank">That Barista Thing</a>, I was really excited about it! Knowing Ronald has an interest in latte art, I asked if he wanted to go. Since the event was taking in Vancouver Public Library, I suggested to give Ebi Ten a visit as it has been a while since we went.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ebi Ten is a Japanese fast food restaurant. The way the restaurant works reminds me of a cafeteria. So first you would pay for your meal. Then you get your receipt with a number on it. When your order is ready, they will call your number!</div>

This Ebi Ten bowl was definitely catered to my preference *drools*. I was having a chicken craving (as always), but I also really like tempura shrimps! The amount of batter for the tempura was perfect; they were definitely not drenched in batter before frying. I quite enjoyed the teriyaki sauce. It was not too sweet like some teriyaki sauce I have tried; it was just enough to bring out a savoury taste.<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

After I got off work today, I was hoping to go home and eat some leftovers from today or yesterday's dinner. But, no luck. My parents went out to eat so there wasn't anything to eat at home...except this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I always try to stay away from microwaveable foods. Well, I did learn the process of how frozen foods are produced, but it is still considered "fast food". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><i>Nutrition Content</i></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Of course, being a nutrition student, I always look at the Nutrition Facts Table! First off, this meal is only 230 Calories. Daily diet for women should be around 2000 Calories/kcal. This being said, I think this meal will only be considered a "snack" or part of a meal. Next thing that caught my attention is the sodium level. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for sodium is ~2000 mg. This meal itself is already 930 mg. And this is the reason why a lot of Canadians and Americans are consuming much higher levels of sodium than recommended. With high levels of sodium in our diet, this will lead to an increased risk of various health concerns such as high blood pressure, kidney disease and stroke.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Another thing that was interesting to point out, was folic acid. From my understanding, folate is the natural form and folic acid is the synthetic form. Does this suggest that external sources of folic acid was added?<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><i>Final product after microwaving for 5 minutes</i></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On to the taste of the meal! Well, the steak obviously did not really taste like steak. It tasted plastic-y. The sauce was savoury! The high sodium content can probably be traced back to the sauce. The corn was on the dry side. I had to put add some sauce to mix it up. I guess the best part was the mashed potatoes! It is kind of difficult to mess up mashed potatoes :P</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I believe my parents got this at WalMart in the states for around $1.25 USD.</div>

So we both ended up getting 15 meatballs <b>($3.99 for Mondays-Fridays; $5.99 for Saturday&Sunday)</b>. You get to pick your own choice of sides (fries, mashed potatoes, pasta with tomato sauce, vegetables or salad). I decided to go with the mashed potatoes while Kimmie got the fries. <div>
The texture of the meatballs was soft and meaty. Don't expect it to be like Chinese fish/beef balls! I wasn't particularly fond of the lingonberry jam. I thought it was an odd complement to the savoury meatballs and gravy. I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes though! The texture is very creamy and smooth; just how I like my mashed potatoes. I took a couple of Kimmie's fries and thought they were just alright (nothing special).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For $3.99, I really couldn't ask for more! I think after Kimmie and I finished up, we didn't eat dinner but instead had a snack later at night.</div>

My mouth is watering as I reminisce on this lovely meal :P Ikea date anyone?</div>

<br />
I usually get this delicious looking chicken steak yakisoba during my dinner break at the airport! It is sort of a "treat" for myself for working hard (not really...it really is just an excuse for me to satisfy my never-ending chicken craving).<br />
<br />
This costs <b>$8.95</b>, which is quite a bit for food court standards. But, airport food is always expensive!<br />
The chicken has a crisp outer layer, which I love. But the noodles on the other hand, I don't like as much. Sometimes I find it too soggy. I figured it was probably due to the fact that I go around 7 p.m. and their store closes at 8 p.m. so the noodles have been sitting around for a day (?). Once, I went earlier, at around 6 p.m. and it was better! The sauce for me is a hit or miss thing. At times it may be a bit on the salty side.<br />

There were a lot of choices on the menu. We couldn't really decide on one, so we settled for the Tuesday special! There was all you can eat for $19.50. But really, all you can eat poutine?! <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><i>CHEESE CURDS!</i></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The size of the poutine looks quite small, but it was SO filling. I was glad the cheese curds didn't all melt, otherwise I can't test whether they are squeaky or not! So with the whole "squeaky" cheese curd business, when you bite into the cheese curds and if they "squeak", this means they are fresh curds. I thought it was the best poutine I ever had; though at the end, the fries were drenched in gravy which was too salty to consume.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Try it out if you are a poutine lover! There is a bus stop right in front of the restaurant, so it is quite convenient to get there. If you are looking for parking, there is an underground pay parking lot nearby.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thank you for bringing me there :)</div>

With so many assignments/quizzes/midterms coming up, I came up with a foodie list (basically a list of restaurants/cafes I want to try) as my motivation :P<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, here it is!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>1. 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters Cafe</b></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.49thparallelroasters.com/"><span style="color: black;">http://www.49thparallelroasters.com</span></a></div>
<div>
I wanted to try this after seeing my friend's cup of latte on Instagram. The latte art was probably the most beautiful one I have ever seen. Apparently, it is owned by the same people who founded <span style="font-family: inherit;"><em style="font-style: normal; white-space: nowrap;">Caffé </em>Artigiano!! So astounded when I found this out! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am a big fan of Starbucks but sometimes I find their coffee to have a sour aftertaste. I am no coffee connoisseur but the sour aftertaste is so displeasing! I prefer Artigiano's coffee as it doesn't have a sour aftertaste. Too bad they don't have any stores in Richmond!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>2. Jethro's Fine Grub</b></span></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.jethrosfinegrub.com/"><span style="color: black;">http://www.jethrosfinegrub.com/</span></a></div>
<div>
Jethro's have been on my list for the longest time (probably since April)! Their Chocolate-Chip Banana Bread French Toast sounds amazing! Scratch that, actually everything sounds good on their menu!!</div>
<div>
Jethro's Fine Grub was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. And I trust Guy Fieri's recommendation after trying out Meat & Bread!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>3. Miku Restaurant</b></div>
<div>
<a href="http://mikurestaurant.com/"><span style="color: black;">http://mikurestaurant.com/</span></a></div>
<div>
I found out about Miku while browsing on Urbanspoon. Their Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi caught my attention right away. They are firmly pressed into a rectangular shape! Some bloggers say it is the best salmon sushi they ever had! </div>
<div>
But, I probably won't get to Miku in October...if not, I will definitely go in November or during Christmas break.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's all on my October Foodie List!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>

Yesterday, Ronald suggested we should have a foodie trip! He picked Meat & Bread in Gastown. I have always wanted to try after seeing so many pictures on Instagram and Facebook!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Meat & Bread is basically a sub/sandwich store. The store itself is not very big. But they have 4 tables by the menu area, a long table which can probably seat 20-30 people and a long bar table by the kitchen/prep area (Sorry!! Forgot to take pictures :p). If you are going with a friend, I suggest that either you or your friend line up and the other go save seats! We went around 2 p.m. and there were quite a lot of people!</div>

While you are lining up to order, you can watch them prepare the porchetta sandwiches! Porchetta is a savoury, boneless, moist pork roast. I think it is quite similar to Chinese roast pork!<br />
<div>
First, they cut up the porchetta then the crispy skin. After, the cut up porchetta is placed on the freshly made ciabatta buns. To finish, they drizzle the salsa verde on top of the porchetta.<br />

I was recommended to try out Watami from my bf, Ronald (Hi!! If you are reading this :P). Basically, it is a Japanese Fusion Restaurant. I thought it was pretty good! The highlight was definitely the beef hot pot. The soup base was DELICIOUS! It was very rich in flavour; went really well with the udon :) I think there are various Watami locations in Hong Kong...not too sure; but we went to the one in Tseung Kwan O Shopping Mall.<br />
<br />
I believe there is a Watami in Richmond (across from Lansdowne), but I heard it is not as great. Maybe someone can try and let me know :)<br />
<br />
Thank you for the recommendation :DAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02490938884129556760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8577551386633301093.post-61016004294900579892012-09-16T14:52:00.003-07:002012-09-16T18:13:26.966-07:00Hong Kong Trip - From YVR to HKG<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Lunch was great! Usually I can't really eat airplane food due to the off-putting smell, but Cathay's meal are quite delicious for airplane meal standards. Shrimps from the salad were fresh. My favourite was the Haagen-Dazs ice-cream bar! I only ate half because I didn't bring my Lactaid pills :P<br />

<br />
After a long 2.9 km hike up the mountain, we decided to reward ourselves with a fattening poutine!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxumhPuZxeBJ3QXun09UehI5YpZTpdjORXznvksPiVYtaL1Vc5LdfNJniapXtwJWFVX5eZp28nBs-cS7LwgXhXCHGIgQFdKP52-uHF0UIwKpUhaXJ-rFS9rYrxNe_kjIYM3WFBOXaSztNF/s1600/IMG_2452.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxumhPuZxeBJ3QXun09UehI5YpZTpdjORXznvksPiVYtaL1Vc5LdfNJniapXtwJWFVX5eZp28nBs-cS7LwgXhXCHGIgQFdKP52-uHF0UIwKpUhaXJ-rFS9rYrxNe_kjIYM3WFBOXaSztNF/s400/IMG_2452.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><i>Poutine!!!</i></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I haven't tried much poutines before, probably only from New York Fries and Pit Pub from the SUB at UBC. I was told that if the cheese curd "squeaks" when you bite into it, then it is considered "good" cheese curds :P But unfortunately this one did not squeak :(<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The fries of this poutine were amazingggg! Not sure if they were double cooked but they were sooo crispy! But my favourite fries are still the ones from A&W...though the ones at A&W seem much more oily. The gravy was not overly seasoned with salt.<br />
<br />
Rating: 4/5<br />
I was disappointed that the cheese curds didn't squeak :( but otherwise, it was really good! Definitely did not expect this from a cafe on Grouse Mountain.<br />

I bought a Groupon in July ($15 for $30 worth of food, good for 2 to 4 people). So I ended up going with bf and his mom :)<br />
<br />
We made a reservation for 6:30 p.m.. and the restaurant was quite full already!<br />

<b>Ebi Mayo - </b>This was my absolute favourite! The ebi mayo was the first dish that arrived, so it sort of set a standard for the dishes that were coming along. It was sort of like shrimp tempura but covered with a sauce that resembles the sweet and sour sauce. The batter was on the thick side, but the sweetness of the shrimp was still shown through.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Pork Belly Lettuce Wraps - </b>I thought this was just alright. This reminded me of the Peking duck lettuce wraps. The down side was it did not come with enough lettuce for each pork belly. There were two pieces remaining that was just eaten on its own. But pork itself was seasoned nicely!<br />

<b>Yaki Udon - </b>Second favourite! :) The portion was quite small. It was enough for around 4-5 bowls. The only down side to the udon was I thought it was sort of wet for fried noodles.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Ishi-Yaki - </b>Before heading to Hapa Izakaya, I read on various blogs that this was one of their best dish. So, we decided to give it a try! It was very similar to the Korean stone bowl rice. When it arrived at our table, it wasn't thoroughly mixed. All the ingredients were laid on top of the rice (just like the Korean style ones). The waitress helped us mix it...for some reason she had to flatten out the rice after all the mixing (not sure why :P)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><b>Crab Croquette</b><br />Dungeness crab, corn, Japanese BBQ sauce</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Renkon Gyoza Tempura - </b>We ordered this and the crab croquette after we finished the rice! This was definitely an interesting dish...that being said, it was something you can probably make at home if you are willing to invest in the time. There was lotus root between the gyoza wrapper and the batter. It added an extra "crunch" in addition to the fried batter.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Crab Croquette - </b>This was probably the most disappointing dish we ordered. My first reaction was: "what?! only 3 pieces?!". But after finishing one piece, I was SO full. Inside has a thick creamy filling. I couldn't really taste the crab though. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Rating: 3.5/5</div>
<div>
We thought the portions were on the small side but we were kind of expecting it to be a light dinner! Though I have not tried other Japanese Tapas, Hapa Izakaya has definitely got me interested in the whole Japanese Tapas experience! But if it wasn't for the Groupon, I probably wouldn't have tried out the restaurant due to its price.</div>

I decided to take a stroll in Gastown after my volunteer shift in North Van. I came across this wrap place on Water Street! It isn't exactly a restaurant but a booth on the street with two tables and a couple plastic chairs. I actually wanted to sit down in a restaurant and have a quick lunch...but I thought I would give this a try ;)</div>

I ordered the small Mexican chicken wrap because most likely I won't be able to finish a large...I wasn't sure of their portions. I opted out of the red onions...the raw onion taste is so displeasing :( Then the man (probably owner) who was making my wrap asked if I want medium or very spicy; I ended up getting medium! He popped the pita bread in the microwave to warm it up. While it was heating up, he went to the rotating spin to cut the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doner_kebab" target="_blank">donair</a> meat (first time trying this :D!)<br />
<br />
I was quite shocked about how generous they were with their portions. I thought the wrap that I got was probably considered "large". The chicken was marinated very nicely. The spices were quite different...never tried anything like this before. I had to take out the Jalapeno peppers after eating half of the wrap...it was too spicy!<br />

YAY for another ramen post!!</div>
<br />
After volunteering in North Van, I wanted a quick ramen fix before my night class at UBC. The only ramen restaurant I could think that was on the way to UBC was Benkei on Broadway. It is easily accessible from Broadway City Hall station of the Canada Line.<br />
<br />
I was quickly greeted by the waitress and was seated immediately. The restaurant was pretty empty (around 2 more tables were seated). I was seated at the bench table; I believe the bench table is for single or two diners.<br />

<span style="font-size: small;">I ordered extra noodles this time because last time I went here, the portions were quite small compared to Kintaro. I was quite disappointed when I received my ramen. Basically as you can see from the picture, you can barely see any ramen. It felt like they took half of what was originally in the bowl and put it on a separate plate and counted that as the "extra noodles". The soup base was pretty much flavour-less. And I thought it was kind of odd to put spinach in the noodles. Lastly, the pork was too dry for my liking. <i>Note to self: </i>never order shoyu ramen at Benkei again!</span></div>

</tbody></table>
After I finished volunteering in North Van a couple weeks later, I decided to give Benkei another try (mainly due to my ramen craving...I wish there are Kintaros everywhere!!).<br />
<br />
This time I ordered miso ramen with no extra noodles (bad experience last time). Surprisingly, there were more noodles than the shoyu ramen and extra noodles combined! The miso soup was definitely a lot richer than shoyu. The pork was still very dry and not tender. But boy did I like the soup! I ended up drinking almost all of it (bad choice for such a hot day :'( ).<br />

I have been having a ramen craving for the longest time, so I nagged my boyfriend to go with me :P<br />
<br />
I have been reluctant to try other ramen restaurants because I believe nothing can beat Kintaro! The restaurant is very very small (probably fit 30-35 people max), so there is always a long line up! There used to be a Kintaro in Richmond across from Richmond Public Market...why did it close down :( I am kind of glad it did actually, otherwise I will have ramen everyday!<br />

We decided on French cuisine since we usually just settle for sushi or pho noodles. I was told the restaurant was really small so we might have to wait a bit for a table. Surprisingly, when we got there, only two tables were seated. Maybe perhaps we went on a Monday night :P<br />

My friends loved this dish! I thought it was kind of odd to serve mussels with fries. The fries were heavily salted. But the cream sauce was very delicious! It wasn't too heavy for cream sauce. The mussels did not have a fresh ocean taste, which was what I preferred. But, in general, the dish was not too spectacular.<br />

The beef was my second favourite dish! The beef was really "grilled to perfection"; it was tender and juicy. It went well with the tahini sauce.<br />

The service was great; the waitress kept checking up on us. I guess the chicken threw me off a little. If it was more juicy, it would be great! If you are up for something new, definitely check out Nuba!
